There is something delightful about circles. The feeling of continuation without anything to block our path brings such an excellent benefit to our mindset. Long forgotten is the old way of gathering in Circle to share stories, learn from each other, pass down wisdom with love and support. Women would lay stones around on the ground to call others to Circle. It was a time of sharing in the community. Often it was around a campfire, but always in Circle.
We live in a rushed modern world, with little or no support from Mothers and Grandmothers. Lost in all the noise is their wisdom. Life is different, but I don’t think better.
To gather in Circle is an art form that we are re-learning for ourselves and all the women who grow with us. How many of us feel lost and unheard, and yet we are pushed forward at a frightening pace, never really knowing why we are here or what our purpose is. Depression, anxiety, isolation and loneliness are common. Its time to change this sad havoc in families.
I recently read this poem about – Circles: “The moon is most happy when it is full. The sun always looks like a perfectly minted gold coin polished and placed in flight by God’s playful kiss. And so many varieties of fruit, hang plump and round. I see the beautiful curve of a pregnant belly, shaped by a soul within, and the earth itself. I have gotten the hint: There is something about circles that the beloved likes. Within the Circle of a perfect one, there is an infinite community of light..”
The more I read that, the more I loved it. God is the perfect one, and we should be that community of shining light. Circles seem to be prominent in creation; camps were set up in circles, and so on. There is a definite protective feel to a circle. Psalm 34, tells us that God’s angel sets up a circle of protection around us. His angel encamps around and will deliver those who love Him. (MSG, NIV)
We are each His marvellous creation. Understanding we are part of the Circle of God’s love opens up whole new possibilities for us. By knowing His love and sharing it with others, we create ripples. If we each have an open heart to others’ needs in our Circle, then the ripple effect would spread that love far, in ever-widening circles.
By gathering women in Circle, we dramatically shift our conversations as we look across into the eyes of one another. We connect.
- Gathering in Circle gives each woman a voice and calls out the best in each of us.
- It allows us to be more intentional and listen more deeply.
- It invites women to step out of judgement and into grace.
- It is a safe space for community and closeness.
- Being heard in Circle gives women confidence.
- It protects health because Oxytocin, the natural love drug, is released when connected with a sense of belonging.
- It strengthens mental health by relieving anxiety and loneliness.
- Circle allows us to give, as well as receive.
- Sharing activities is a bonding experience that produces growth.
The list could go on and on, just like the Circle itself, but I’ll leave you to ponder the possibilities of what Circle could mean for your own unique life.
Of course, the events of 2020 mean that we are more online than ever before, so we’ve adapted to hold Circle on Zoom for those who can’t answer the call in person. Go to my FB group to see where we are and what we’re doing. Hope you can join us soon. https://www.facebook.com/groups/womenscircleofhopeandhealing
